What is Pursana and when is it used?
Pursana is an osmotic laxative and contains a combination of sorbitol and aqueous fig extract.
Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol, only a small part of which is absorbed by the body. The sorbitol that remains in the intestines retains water, thereby softening the stool and making it easier to defecate. The mucilage, fructose and fruit acids contained in the fig extract support this effect.Pursana is suitable for regulating stool if you have a tendency to constipation, as well as for constipation caused by a change in lifestyle or eating habits (e.g. bed rest or travelling) or for illnesses where easy bowel movements are desired (e.g. haemorrhoids).
What should you bear in mind?
If you suffer from constipation , you should eat high-fiber food (vegetables, fruit, whole-grain bread), if possible, and take in plenty of fluids and exercise regularly (sports)!
This medicine contains 18-23 g of usable carbohydrates per single dose (30 ml).
When should Pursana not be taken?
Pursana should not be taken in the case of inflammatory bowel diseases and bowel obstruction. Also not for abdominal pain of unknown origin, bloody stool or if you have an artificial anus. It must not be used in children under the age of six.
Since sorbitol is partially converted into fructose in the body, Pursana must not be taken if there is a known fructose intolerance.
When is caution required when using Pursana?
Chronic use/abuse or use of higher than recommended doses can cause diarrhea with water loss and disturbances in salt balance (especially potassium loss). Therefore, special caution is required in patients who are also taking certain water-repellent drugs (diuretics), drugs containing liquorice root, corticosteroids, certain antihistamines (such as terfenadine), drugs for heart muscle weakness (cardiac glycosides such as digoxin) and certain drugs for cardiac arrhythmias (antiarrhythmics).
Sorbitol can affect the availability of other drugs in the bloodstream when taken at the same time.
As with all laxatives, there is an uninterrupted e to avoid long-term use without medical advice.Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist or your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you
