What is Bilaxten and when is it used?

Bilaxten with the active ingredient bilastine is a drug that belongs to the class of long-acting antiallergic drugs. Bilaxten is used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever (sneezing, itching, runny or stuffy nose and watery eyes). Biaxten is also used to treat itchy skin rashes (urticaria or nettle rash).

When should Bilaxten not be taken?

Do not take Bilaxten tablets if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active ingredient bilastine or other ingredients in the Bilaxten tablets.

When is caution required when taking Bilaxten?

Bilaxten tablets are not suitable for the treatment of children under 12 years of age. If you suffer from moderate renal impairment, caution is advised, please tell your doctor. If they suffer from severe impairment of kidney or liver function, Bilaxten should not be used. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding, please talk to your doctor (see «Can Bilaxten be taken while pregnant or breast-feeding?»). The recommended dosage must not be exceeded. If your symptoms persist despite treatment, contact your doctor.

Ability to drive/use tools or machines

Bilaxten tablets may cause increased sleepiness and may therefore impair the ability to drive and use tools or machines.

Interactions with other medicines

In particular, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Ketoconazole (an antifungal medicine),Erythromycin (an antibiotic),Diltiazem (an anti-angina medicine). /ul>

    Taking Bilaxten with food and drink

    Bilaxten tablets must not be taken at the same time as food, as this reduces the effect of Bilaxten. The Bilaxten tablets should under no circumstances be taken at the same time as grapefruit juice or other fruit juices. This medicinal product contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per tablet, i.e. essentially 'sodium-free'. it is almost «sodium-free». Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

    • suffer from other diseases,have allergies ortake other medicines (including those you bought yourself!).

Can Biaxten be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no or limited data on the use of bilastine in pregnant women and during breastfeeding and on the effects on the fertility. Tell your doctor or health care professional if you are currently pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take Bilaxten unless told to do so by a doctor. or the doctor has expressly prescribed this. If used, breastfeeding must be stopped.

How do you use Bilaxten?Adults and adolescents over 12 years:

  • Take one tablet one per day.The Bilaxten tablets must be taken on an empty stomach 1 hour before food or fruit juice, e.g. in the morning 1 hour before breakfast. After eating or drinking fruit juice, you must wait at least 2 hours before taking Bilaxten.Take the Bilaxten tablets with a glass of water.The decorative groove on the tablets is only intended to make it easier to take the tablet if you have difficulty swallowing the whole tablet. The tablets are not intended for halving the dosage.

Do not take Bilaxten tablets for more than 10 days without consulting your doctor.

Use in children

The use and safety of bilaxes in children under the age of 12 has not yet been tested.

If you take more Bilaxten than you should

If you, or someone else, have taken too many Bilaxten tablets (i.e. more than the prescribed number), contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

If you forget to take Bilaxten

If you forget to take the Bilaxten tablet, do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose to compensate. If you find that you have forgotten to take your Bilaxten tablet each day, wait until the next usual time to take the next tablet and then continue to take it as prescribed or as usual. Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Bilaxten have?

The following side effects can occur when taking Bilaxten:

Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100)

Headache, drowsiness.

Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 users in 1000)

Abnormal liver values, abnormalities in the ECG (electrocardiogram) examination, disturbances in the conduction of the heart, cardiac arrhythmias, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in ears), vertigo (feeling dizzy or spinning), shortness of breath (difficulty breathing), dry or uncomfortable nose, stomach pain, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, indigestion, inflammation of the lining of the stomach, itching , increased appetite, cold sores (oral herpes), tiredness, thirst, fever, feeling weak, feeling anxious, insomnia, weight gain.

Frequency not known (cannot be estimated from the available data)

pounding heartbeat (palpitations), rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), allergic reactions (the symptoms may include difficulty breathing, dizziness, collapse or loss of consciousness, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat and/or swelling and redness of the skin If you notice any of these serious side effects, stop taking it and see a doctor straight away), vomiting . If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

What else needs to be considered?Shelf life

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked on the container with « EXP» can be used. Any tablets remaining after the end of the treatment or tablets with an expired expiry date should be handed over to your point of sale (doctor, pharmacist or druggist) for professional disposal.
