What are Prospan cough drops and when are they used?

Prospan cough drops contain a dry extract from the leaves of the ivy as an active ingredient. Ivy has expectorant and antispasmodic properties. Prospan cough drops are used in cases of excessive build-up of viscous mucus, for coughing up a cold.

What should be considered?

If the cough lasts longer than seven days, a doctor must be consulted.This medicinal product contains a maximum of 1 mg usable carbohydrates per 1 ml.

When should Prospan cough drops not be taken or should only be taken with caution? h3>

Prospan cough drops should not be taken if you are hypersensitive to one of the ingredients (see «What does Prospan cough drop contain?»). This applies in particular to those people who have been strictly forbidden by their doctor to take even minimal amounts of alcohol (e.g. after withdrawal treatment).This medicine contains 47% by volume alcohol.Only use in children under the age of 2 years as prescribed by a doctor!Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

Can Prospan cough drops be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Based on previous experience, there is no known risk for the child when used as intended. However, systematic scientific investigations have never been carried out. As a precaution, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding or ask your doctor, pharmacist or druggist for advice.

How do you use Prospan cough drops?

Unless otherwise prescribed, adults and school children from the age of 6 years take 20 drops, small children from the age of 2 years 15 drops, 3-5 times a day, diluted with water or tea. For small children, it is advisable to administer the drops together with some tea or fruit juice.

Inhalation therapy with Prospan cough drops

An additional effect can be achieved by inhaling the solution using the aerosol method.

Practically all commercially available devices for cold nebulization are suitable for this. Under no circumstances should Prospan cough drops be vaporized or heated in any way, as this would destroy the herbal active ingredients. To avoid occasional irritation due to the alcohol content of Prospan Husten dropped, the drops can be diluted with drinking water for inhalation at a ratio of 1:2.

Dosage for the inhalation device

Unless otherwise prescribed, inhale 20-25 drops 3-5 times a day.

Observe the dosage specified in the package leaflet or prescribed by the doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Prospan cough drops have?

The following side effects can occur when taking Prospan cough drops:No side effects have so far been observed for Prospan cough drops when used as intended.Only very rarely after taking it allergic reactions (shortness of breath, swelling, redness of the skin, itching) from medicines containing ivy.Sensitive people may very rarely experience gastrointestinal problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).If allergic reactions occur, theto refrain from using it and, if necessary, to consult a doctor.There are no known interactions when Prospan Husten dropped and other medicines are taken at the same time. The preparation can therefore also be combined with other medicines.If you notice any side effects that are not described here, you should inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What else needs to be considered?

The medicine may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container.Store at room temperature (15-25 °C) in the original packaging.The medicinal product should be kept out of the reach of children!The preparation contains a production-related content of 47% by volume alcohol.Prospan cough drops contain a herbal active ingredient. This plant extract can cause dark particles to form in the liquid. The taste can also vary slightly. However, neither has any influence on the quality of the product.

What does Prospan cough drop contain?

1 ml of Prospan cough drop contains 20 mg of dry ivy leaf extract (DEV 5-7.5:1). Extraction agent: ethanol 36.3% (V/V).This preparation also contains aromatics, saccharin, alcohol (47% by volume) and other auxiliary substances.1 ml = 30 drops.
