What is Braunol and when is it used?

Braunol is an aqueous, standardized povidone-iodine solution for external use.

In self-medication, Braunol is used to disinfect the skin and mucous membranes, to disinfect superficial wounds and small, minor burns (burns without blistering).

What should be considered?

Large, heavily soiled and deep wounds, as well as bite and puncture wounds require medical treatment (danger of tetanus). If the extent of a wound remains unchanged for some time or the wound does not heal within 10 - 14 days, a doctor's visit is also necessary. The same applies if the edges of the wound are very red, the wound suddenly swells, is very painful or the injury is accompanied by fever (danger of blood poisoning).

When must Braunol not be used?

Braunol must not be used:? with known hypersensitivity to iodine or an ingredient? with an overactive thyroid gland or other existing thyroid diseases?in the matitis herpetiformis Duhring (rare herpes-like skin disease)?before and after radioiodine therapy (until the end of the treatment)?in newborns and infants under 6 months

When is caution required when using Braunol?

In the following cases, Braunol should not be used or only after medical clarification and prescription:

? after a thyroid disease as well as thyroid enlargements or lumps. In particular, Braunol should not be used on large areas or over a longer period of time. Even after the end of treatment (up to 3 months) one should pay attention to early symptoms of possible hyperthyroidism and monitor thyroid function if indicated. It may be necessary for the child's doctor to check the thyroid function. Any ingestion of Braunol by a child should be avoided.

Braunol should not be used over a longer period of time (e.g. longer than 14 days) or over large areas (e.g. more than 10% of the body surface) without medical supervision.

When disinfecting the skin before an operation, make sure that Braunol does not accumulate in skin folds or under the lying patient or penetrate under electrode contact points. Due to the large amounts of iodine and the conductivity of the solution, skin irritation or even skin damage can occur in such situations.

Braunol must not be used simultaneously with or shortly after enzymatic wound treatment agents or disinfectants that contain silver , hydrogen peroxide or taurolidine, as this can lead to a mutual weakening of the effect.Braunol must not be used simultaneously with or shortly after disinfectants containing mercury, since iodine and mercury can form a substance that damages the skin.

Do not use Braunol at the same time as or immediately after using disinfectants containing octenidine on the same or neighboring areas, as this can otherwise lead to temporary dark discolouration.

If you are treated with lithium preparations, you should avoid using Braunol regularly, especially over large areas. Ingested iodine can promote the possible triggering of hypothyroidism by lithium.

Braunol should not be used for rinsing body cavities (e.g. in the chest or abdomen).le) are used, especially not repeatedly.

If metabolic acidosis occurs in the blood (metabolic acidosis), the treatment should be discontinued.

If you need a laboratory test, e.g. for your thyroid function, tell your doctor that you are using Braunol, as Braunol can affect certain laboratory tests.

Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist or your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you?suffer from other illnesses,?have allergies or?take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!
