What is Dulcolax Bisacodyl and when is it used ?
Dulcolax Bisacodyl is a laxative that acts on the colon. It triggers the stool-promoting movement of the large intestine. Dulcolax Bisacodyl is used in the short term for constipation, constipation caused by bed rest, an unfamiliar diet or when travelling. The following uses are under medical supervision: Dulcolax Bisacodyl can also be administered when pressure must be avoided, e.g. in the case of haemorrhoids and anal fissures, before X-rays of the gastrointestinal tract and before and after surgery as an aid to defecation.
What should be considered?
Children and patients with serious illnesses require medical advice. In the case of chronic constipation, its origin must be determined by the doctor. Long-term treatment should be under medical supervision.
General information
If you are constipated, you should, if possible, eat fiber-rich food (vegetables, fruit, wholemeal bread) and drink plenty of fluids regularly and pay attention to physical activity (sport). .
When must Dulcolax Bisacodyl not be used?
Dulcolax Bisacodyl must not be used if there is a known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or one of the ingredients (galactose - and fructose intolerance: see "When is caution required when taking/using Dulcolax Bisacodyl"), in the case of narrowing of the intestine, intestinal obstruction (ileus), acute diseases in the abdominal cavity such as acute appendicitis and acute intestinal inflammation as well as severe abdominal pain in combination with Nausea and vomiting, which indicate a serious illness. Dulcolax Bisacodyl must not be used in the case of severe fluid and potassium deficiency.
When is caution required when taking/using Dulcolax Bisacodyl?
Children under the age of 12 should only be given Dulcolax Bisacodyl if recommended by a doctor . As with all laxatives, continuous daily use over a period longer than 1-2 weeks is not indicated for Dulcolax Bisacodyl. If laxatives are used daily, the cause of the constipation should be investigated. Long-term treatments belong under medical supervision. Long-term or high-dose use can result in loss of water and minerals (potassium) and lead to muscle weakness and increased constipation. Loss of fluid in the intestines can promote fluid loss in the body, which can cause thirst and reduced urination. In patients where this could be detrimental, such as renal insufficiency and the elderly, Dulcolax Bisacodyl should be discontinued and only resumed under medical supervision. A generally mild, self-limiting bloody stool may occur. Patients who take diuretic drugs, oral corticosteroids or digitalis preparations should only take Dulcolax Bisacodyl after consulting their doctor. In very rare individual cases, patients who have taken Dulcolax Bisacodyl have experienced dizziness or brief fits of unconsciousness (syncope). According to the corresponding case reports, these are probably syncopes, which are either due to the purging process itself, to straining or to vascular reactions mediated via the nervous system due to abdominal pain caused by constipation, but not necessarily to the use of Dulcolax Bisacodyl itself. If abdominal cramps occur, potentially hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery should be avoided. Dulcolax Bisacodyl acts in the large intestine. It is not effective in influencing nutrient absorption and thus calorie intake, since nutrient absorption mainly takes place in the small intestine. Stimulant laxatives, including Dulcolax, therefore do not contribute to weight loss. The simultaneous use of other laxatives can increase the side effects of Dulcolax in the stomach and intestines. A Dulcolax Bisacodyl dragée contains 33.2 mg lactose and 23.4 mg sucrose. When treating constipation in adults and children over 12 years of age, this equates to up to 66.4 mg lactose and 46.8 mg sucrose daily. Patients with a rare hereditary galactose intolerance, e.g. galactosemia or a rare hereditary fructose intolerance should not take the coated tablets. Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

Can Dulcolax Bisacodyl be taken/used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
As a precautionary measure, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy if possible. Only your doctor can decide whether Dulcolax Bisacodyl can be used during pregnancy. Dulcolax Bisacodyl can be used while breastfeeding.
How do you use Dulcolax Bisacodyl?
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor:
Dragées
Adults and children over 12 years: average single dose: 1-2 dragées per day. Children from 4-12 years: as prescribed by the doctor. The dragées should be taken in the evening before going to bed so that the bowel movements can take place the next morning. If taken in the evening, after about 10 hours, i.e. without disturbing the night?s sleep, there will be one or two emptyings the next morning. Dulcolax Bisacodyl Dragées are swallowed whole with sufficient liquid (no milk). Milk and medicines against gastric hyperacidity should not be taken at the same time as Dulcolax Bisacodyl coated tablets, otherwise the coated tablets will dissolve more quickly than desired. If you need an antacid (medicine against acid in the stomach), take it half an hour after Dulcolax Bisacodyl.
Suppositories
Adults and children over 12 years: average single dose: 1 suppository per day, which is freed from the foil cover and with the pointed end inserted into the rectum. The triggering of one to two symptom-free emptyings within 20 minutes (in the range of 10-30 minutes) is characteristic of the effect. Children from 4-12 years: as prescribed by the doctor. Suppositories can cause pain and local irritation, especially in patients with anal fissures and acute rectal inflammation.
General recommendation:
It is recommended to start with the lowest dose. In order to achieve regular bowel movements, the dose can be increased up to the maximum recommended dose. The maximum daily dose must not be exceeded. Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. What side effects can Dulcolax Bisacodyl have?
After taking Dulcolax Bisacodyl, you may experience unpleasant sensations in the abdominal area: abdominal cramps and abdominal pain are common , or diarrhea on; occasionally there are vomiting, dizziness, bloody stools and discomfort in the abdominal and/or anal area. Syncope (briefly unconsciousness), dehydration, inflammation of the colon (including symptoms such as intestinal cramps, pain in the stomach area, diarrhea and bloody stools) and hypersensitivity reactions, which can lead to allergic skin reactions and shock symptoms (angioedema, anaphylactic reactions), occur rarely .
