What is Phytovir and when is it used?
Phytovir is a herbal remedy containing rhubarb root extract and sage leaf extract. Both the rhubarb root and the sage leaves have an antiviral effect against herpes viruses. Sage leaves also have an anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effect. The plants, which complement each other in their effect, accelerate the healing of herpes labialis (cold sores or cold sores). Phytovir is used externally to treat herpes labialis (cold sores).
What should be considered?
Fever blisters can be triggered by strong UV light (e.g. sun), stress and other factors. Cold sores are contagious. In the case of fresh lesions in particular, it should be noted that the infection can be transmitted (e.g. when kissing). After using the cream, be careful not to touch your fingers to any other part of your body, especially your eyes, before washing them.
When must Phytovir not be used?
Phytovir must not be used if there is a known allergy to one of the ingredients (see composition).
When is caution required when using Phytovir?
Phytovir should not be used on mucous membranes (e.g. mouth or genital area) or on the eyes. If the cold sores do not heal or if they even get worse, you should consult your doctor. Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you have any known allergies (drugs, food, household, work), if you suffer from other illnesses or if you take other medicines (including those you bought yourself) or use them externally.
Can Phytovir be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Based on previous experience, there is no known risk for the child. However, systematic scientific investigations have never been carried out. As a precaution, you should avoid medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding or ask your doctor for advice.
How do you use Phytovir?
Adults: Phytovir is applied to the affected area approximately every four hours during waking hours. Treatment should be started as soon as possible after the first symptoms such as tingling, itching or burning appear and continued until the symptoms subside or for a maximum of 10 days. Hands should be washed before and after applying the cream to prevent possible spread of infection. The use and safety of Phytovir in children and adolescents has not yet been tested. Stick to the dosage specified in the brochure or prescribed by the doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
What side effects can Phytovir have?
A temporary, harmless yellowish discoloration of the skin may occur. Occasionally, a brief burning sensation or drying out at the treated site has been observed. If you notice any side effects that are not described here, you should inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
What else needs to be considered?
Keep medicines out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature (15-25°C). The drug may only be used up to the date marked "EXP" on the packaging. Your doctor, pharmacist or druggist can provide you with further information.
