What is Emadine eye drops and when is it used?

Emadine eye drops are intended to treat the typical symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis (itching, redness, conjunctival edema, swollen eyelids). Emadine eye drops can be used in children from the age of three and adults up to the age of 65.

What should be considered?Note for contact lens wearers:

Emadine contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which can cause eye irritation and can discolor soft contact lenses. Remove the lenses before using Emadine eye drops. Do not put the lenses back in until 15 minutes after the medicine has been instilled.

When should Emadine eye drops not be used?

In the case of known or suspected hypersensitivity (allergy) to an ingredient in Emadine.

When should you be careful when using Emadine eye drops?

Do not use Emadine eye drops for more than 2 weeks without a doctor's prescription. If the symptoms persist after this time, a doctor should be consulted. The medicine can be used for up to 6 weeks if prescribed by the doctor. If you suffer from liver or kidney disease, you should not use Emadine without consulting your doctor. Immediate blurring of vision may occur immediately after using Emadine. Do not drive or use machines until the impairment has worn off. Emadine contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which may cause eye irritation and discolour soft contact lenses. Remove the lenses before using Emadine eye drops. Do not put the lenses back in until 15 minutes after the medicine has been instilled. Benzalkonium chloride can also cause eye irritation, particularly if you have dry eyes or diseases of the cornea (the clear layer at the front of the eye). Contact your doctor if you get an unusual feeling, burning or pain in your eye after using this medicine. The use and safety of Emadine eye drops has not been tested in children under 3 years of age and adults over 65 years of age. Therefore, use in children under 3 years and adults over 65 years is not recommended. Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies or are taking other medicines (even those you bought yourself!) or use them on your eyes!

Can Emadine eye drops be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding only on the recommendation of your doctor or pharmacist.

How do you use Emadine eye drops?

The use and safety of Emadine eye drops in children under the age of 3 and adults over the age of 65 has not been tested.

Children from the age of 3 and adults up to the age of 65

In general, a dosage recommendation of one drop applies two to four times a day to the affected eye(s) is instilled. If you miss taking this medicine, do it as soon as possible. If a drop does not get into the eye, add more drops and continue the treatment regularly. If you have used too much of this medicine you can flush your eye(s) with warm water. Do not touch the eyelids and the area around the eyes or any other surface with the dropper tip of the bottle to avoid contaminating the dropper tip and the solution. Close bottle well after use. Remove the detached safety ring after opening and before first use. Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Emadine eye drops have?

The following side effects can occur when using Emadine eye drops:

Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100)

Effects in the eye: Eye pain, eye itching.

Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 users in 1000)

Eye effects: Corneal epithelial defects, corneal discoloration, blurred vision, eye irritation, dryness eye, changed or decreased sensation in the eye, increased tear production, tired eyes, red eyes. Effects in the body: Abnormal dreams, Headache, Weakness, Taste abnormalities, Skin reactions. If you have any unusual reaction to Emadine eye drops, you should stop treatment and contact your doctor, pharmacist or druggist immediately. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

What else needs to be considered?

The medicinal product may only be used up to the expiry date marked on the container with «EXP». After completing treatment, take the medicine to your point of sale (doctor's practice or pharmacy) for professional disposal.

Use by after opening

Once the bottle has been opened, do not use for more than 4 weeks.

Storage Instructions

Store in the closed original packaging at room temperature (15-25 °C) and out of the reach of children.

What does Emadine eye drops contain?Active ingredients

Emedastine (as difumarate). 1 ml solution contains: 0.5 mg emedastine.

Excipients

This medicinal product contains 0.1 mg benzalkonium chloride per 1 ml solution as well as trometamol, sodium chloride, hypromellose 2900 and hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide.
