What is Spersadex comp. and when is it used?
Spersadex comp. are eye drops with an antibiotic (chloramphenicol) and an anti-inflammatory substance called the corticosteroid dexamethasone. They are used, among other things, for inflammation in the anterior part of the eye caused by bacteria or when the risk of bacterial infection is increased. Spersadex comp. may only be used if prescribed by a doctor.
When can Spersadex comp. not be used?
- If you are on the active ingredients dexamethasone, chloramphenicol or other ingredients of Spersadex comp. are allergic.If there are diseases such as glaucoma, ulcers or external injuries to the cornea.If you have severe blood disorders or liver problems, or if your relatives (blood) have suffered from bone marrow depression (aplastic anemia).If the eye infection was caused by a viral or fungal infection.When Spersadex comp. Has been prescribed for your newborn child (0 to 27 days old).
When is the use of Spersadex comp. Be careful?
This medicine can have side effects that may affect your vision (e.g. blurred vision). Do not drive or use machines until these effects wear off.Inform your doctor if you suffer from other illnesses (such as increased intraocular pressure, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias or diabetes in the elderly, hyperthyroidism, "dry nasal mucosa") or if you have allergies. Since Spersadex comp. cannot be combined with any other medicinal product (including tablets with certain active ingredients), if you are taking Spersadex comp. take other medicines (including ones you have bought yourself!) or use them on the eye, discuss this with your doctor so that an optimal schedule can be drawn up for the individual applications.Spersadex comp. cannot be used indiscriminately against all inflammations in the anterior segment of the eye. In order to avoid lengthy complications that can be caused by using an incorrectly selected or incorrectly dosed eye preparation, you may use Spersadex comp. Do not use (even with later new inflammations) without a doctor's prescription.In very rare cases, prolonged treatment with chloramphenicol, even with topical treatment on the eye, can lead to bone marrow disease (the bone marrow decreases or the number of blood cells decreases). The irreversible form of the disease can also appear after weeks or months and have life-threatening consequences.Apply Spersadex comp. If you are taking drugs that damage blood formation (drugs that damage the haematopoiesis), such as sulfonylureas (drugs for diabetes mellitus such as glipizide, gliclazide, glibenclamide), coumarin derivatives (anticoagulants), hydantoins (e.g. phenytoin, which is used in epilepsy ) and antineoplastic drugs (cancer drugs such as methotrexate).Is Spersadex comp. Has been prescribed for your baby or toddler (28 days to 23 months old), tell your doctor or health care professional.Spersadex comp. contains benzalkonium chloride as a preservative, which can accumulate in soft contact lenses and cause discoloration there. How do you use Spersadex comp.?Generally:
1 drop is given into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye 3-5 times per day. In severe cases, the dose can be increased to 1 drop every hour for the first 24 to 48 hours.If your eye disease does not improve after 3 days of treatment, it is essential that you consult your ophthalmologist. Spersadex comp. should not be used for more than 10 days.There must be an interval of 5 minutes between the individual applications between two drugs that are administered locally to the eye.Hold the dropper bottle with one hand with the head tilted backwards as vertically as possible over the eye, with the other hand pull the lower eyelid slightly downwards and by pressing the bottle let a drop fall into the conjunctival sac (avoid touching the eye or the lower eyelid with the drip attachment). For reasons of sterility, make sure that when using the bottle neck and the dropper tip neither hands nor other objects come into contact.
Elderly (over 65 years)

Children and adolescentsNewborns (0 to 27 days old)
