What is Umckaloabo and when is it used?
Umckaloabo is a herbal medicine and contains an extract of the roots of Pelargonium sidoides. Umckaloabo is used for the symptomatic treatment of acute bronchitis.
What should be considered?
Cough that lasts longer than 7 days, fever that lasts for several days, signs of liver dysfunction such as yellowing of the skin or the White eyes, dark urine, severe pain in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, as well as shortness of breath or bloody sputum, a doctor or pharmacist must be consulted.
When must Umckaloabo not be taken or only with caution?
Umckaloabo must not be taken:
- If you are known to be hypersensitive to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of the drugIf you have severe liver diseaseBe careful if you have an increased tendency to bleed and if you are taking anticoagulants (oral anticoagulants such as warfarin , phenprocoumon)
Coughs in children under the age of 2 should be examined by a doctor. Therefore, the drug should not be used in children under 2 years of age without prior medical examination. Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you
- suffer from other diseases,have allergies ortake other medicines (including those you bought yourself!)!
Can Umckaloabo be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
As a precaution, you should not take the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as there is insufficient experience in this regard.
How do you use Umckaloabo?
Unless otherwise directed, adults and adolescents over 12 years of age take 30 drops 3 times daily. Children aged 6-12 years take 20 drops 3 times daily. Children aged 2-5 years can be treated with umckaloabo syrup. The drops should be taken with some liquid. The duration of treatment should not exceed 3 weeks.

Follow the instructions given in the package insert or recommended by your doctor or dosage prescribed by the doctor. If the desired improvement does not occur during treatment of a child, a doctor should be consulted with him or her. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
What side effects can Umckaloabo have?
Occasionally, gastrointestinal complaints (such as stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea) may occur. In rare cases, slight bleeding from the gums or nose can occur. In addition, hypersensitivity reactions have been described in rare cases (skin rash, hives, itching of the skin and mucous membranes). Such reactions can occur after the first use of the drug. In very rare cases, severe hypersensitivity reactions with facial swelling, shortness of breath and drop in blood pressure can occur. In individual cases, there were indications of liver dysfunction whose causal connection with the intake of Umckaloabo is not certain. If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.
What else needs to be considered?
The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container. Plant extracts in the form of drops can tend to cloud over after a long period of time, but this has no effect on the effectiveness. Umckaloabo is a natural product, slight variations in color and taste may occur.
Use by after opening
Umckaloabo has a shelf life of 6 months after opening the container.

Do not store above 30°C. Keep out of the reach of children.
