What is Umckaloabo and when is it used?

Umckaloabo is a herbal remedy and contains a dried extract of the roots of Pelargonium sidoides, a plant found only in South Africa.

Umckaloabo is used for the symptomatic treatment of acute bronchitis.

What should be considered?

Cough that lasts longer than 7 days, with more than several days persistent fever, if there are signs of liver dysfunction, such as yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes, dark urine, severe pain in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, as well as shortness of breath or bloody sputum, a doctor or pharmacist must be consulted.

The treatment period should not exceed 3 weeks.

When should Umckaloabo not be taken or only with caution?

Umckaloab o must not be taken:

Can Umckaloabo be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

How do you use Umckaloabo?

Unless otherwise prescribed, adults and adolescents from the age of 12 years take: 1 film-coated tablet 3 times a day (morning, midday and evening) with some liquid.Observe the dosage given in the package leaflet or prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Umckaloabo have?

Occasionally, gastrointestinal problems (such as stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea) may occur. In rare cases, slight bleeding from the gums or nose can occur. In addition, hypersensitivity reactions have been described in rare cases (skin rash, hives, itching of the skin and mucous membranes). Such reactions can occur after the first use of the drug.

In very rare cases, severe hypersensitivity reactions with facial swelling, shortness of breath and drop in blood pressure can occur.

In individual cases there were indications of liver dysfunction whose causal connection with the intake of Umckaloabo is not certain.
