What is Alcacyl and when is it used?

Alcacyl contains the active substance acetylsalicylic acid. This has a pain-relieving and fever-reducing effect.

  • Alcacyl is used for the short-term treatment of mild to moderate acute pain (headache, toothache, joint and ligament pain, back pain).for the symptomatic treatment of fever and/or or pain from colds. Children and adolescents only with a doctor's prescription and only as a second-line drug (see «When should caution be taken when taking Alcacyl?»).

What should should be observed?

Like all fever or painkillers, Alcacyl should not be used for longer than 5 days or longer than 3 days in the case of fever without a doctor's prescription. Painkillers should not be taken regularly over a long period of time without medical supervision. Prolonged pain requires medical evaluation. Long-term use of painkillers and antipyretics, especially those that contain several painkillers, can lead to permanent kidney damage with the risk of kidney failure. The dosage specified or prescribed by the doctor must not be exceeded. Long-term use of painkillers can contribute to headache persistence.

When should Alcacyl not be used?

You must not use Alcacyl in the following cases:

  • If you suffer from a stomach or duodenal ulcer. If you suffer from a pathologically increased tendency to bleed. In conditions with an increased risk of bleeding (e.g. menstrual bleeding or injuries) .If you are hypersensitive to the active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid, other anti-inflammatory drugs (rheumatism) or other painkillers and fever relievers. Such hypersensitivity is expressed, for example, by asthma, shortness of breath, circulatory problems, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes or skin rashes (urticaria). In the case of severe liver or kidney diseases. In the last 3 months before the expected date of birth.

When is caution required when taking Alcacyl?

If the kidneys and/or liver are already damaged, careful monitoring necessary. In the case of chronic or recurring gastrointestinal complaints, asthma, nettle fever, nasal polyps, a rare hereditary disease of the red blood cells (the so-called «glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency») and treatment with anticoagulants («blood thinners ») should only be taken according to the strict instructions of the doctor. In the case of diabetics, the doctor should decide whether to adjust the insulin or antidiabetic dose during high-dose treatment with Alcacyl. Children and adolescents with fever, flu, chickenpox or other viral diseases may only take Alcacyl tablets as directed by their doctor and only as a second-line remedy. If you experience disturbances of consciousness with vomiting during these illnesses or after they have subsided, you should consult your doctor immediately. The simultaneous and prolonged use of Alcacyl together with cortisone preparations, blood thinners, lithium preparations for depression and tablets for diabetes can increase their effect. The effect of gout medicines (Probenecid and Sulfinpyrazon) can be reduced. The use of anti-rheumatic drugs or methotrexate (which is taken, for example, for chronic polyarthritis) may result in an increase in the undesirable effects. Serious skin reactions have been reported in association with treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The highest risk of such reactions appears to be at the beginning of therapy. If you develop a skin rash, including fever, mucosal lesions, blisters, or any other sign of allergy, you should stop using Alcacyl and seek medical attention immediately, as these may be the first signs of a very serious skin reaction (see section 'What Alcacyl can have side effects?») Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

  • suffer from other illnesses, have allergies ortake other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!

The doctor or dentist should be asked or informed about the intake before surgery.

Can Alcacyl be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding?

You should not take Alcacyl unless clearly necessary and advised by a doctor/ doctor prescribed. If taken during the first 6 months of pregnancy, the dose should be kept as low and the duration of treatment as short as possible. Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) after the 20th week of pregnancy may harm your unborn baby. If you have to take NSAIDs for more than 2 days, your doctor may need to monitor the amount of amniotic fluid in the womb and the fetal heart. Alcacyl should not be taken during the last trimester of pregnancy. With short-term use at the recommended dose, discontinuation of breastfeeding is not necessary. However, if you use it for a long time or take higher doses, you should stop breastfeeding.

How do you use Alcacyl?

Adults and children over 12 years and heavier than 40 kg: The usual single dose is 1-2 tablets, the usual dosing interval is 4-8 Hours. A daily dose of 7 tablets must not be exceeded for adults (equivalent to 2.9 g acetylsalicylic acid). Children: from 9-12 years (30-40 kg): 1 tablet 1-3 times a day. from 6-9 years (22-30 kg): ½ tablet 1-5 times a day. A precisely dosed preparation must be used for children aged 2-6 years. The medicine should be made up with plenty of liquid and taken after a meal if possible. Alcacyl contains aluminum hydroxide and should therefore not be taken at the same time as other medicines, but should be taken about 2 hours apart. Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Alcacyl have?

Stomach problems can occur as a side effect. In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions such as swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, skin rashes, asthma, shortness of breath and gastric ulcers and bleeding in the gastric mucosa can occur. If signs of a hypersensitivity reaction occur, the drug should be discontinued and the doctor consulted. If the stool turns black or there is blood in the vomit during treatment, the drug should be discontinued and the doctor consulted immediately. Rarely, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision and confusion occur. Frequency not known: A serious skin reaction known as DRESS syndrome can occur. Symptoms of DRESS include a rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and an increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell). If you notice side effects that are not described here, you should inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
